Gita Chaudhary; A professional Cook

Gita Chaudhary’s plight is similar to that of many rural women. She had to drop out of school when she was in fifth grade due to low economic condition at home and she was married off at a young age. At such a young age, she was laden with the responsibility of children and family. Due to poor economic condition at home, she worked as a care giver in a nearby Montessori school. It was difficult for her to manage her household expenses and she could not even afford to educate her children. At merely a young age of 26, she had faced all the worldly woes.

One day she heard about cook training being organized by SKILL-Nepal under USAID/Nepal’s EIG program through local F.M. She immediately applied for the training and got selected for the training program because she matched all the required criteria. During the training program, she learnt how to cook Indian, Nepali, Chinese and continental cuisine. The package was designed to meet the demand of local regional market. The training was conducted by trainers who had years of cooking experience in the country and abroad. The complete practical sessions followed by OJT in different hotel boosted Gita’s confidence. After the completion of the training, she started working in a nearby hotel but her family was against her working as a cook. Her family’s constant disagreement made it difficult for her to work so she started staying separately from them.

Her dedication and sacrifice finally paid off. With the help of SKILL-Nepal she got the job of an assistant cook in Hotel Siddhartha View in Surkhet. They pay her a monthly salary of about Rs. 11,000. She can now afford good school for her children and is able to save money too. She plans to buy a piece of land with her savings some day. Her family is happy seeing her succeed and they all stay together now.

Life has become much more easier for Gita. She feels that she has regained all her lost years again. She is happy, enthusiastic and works hard every day and aspires to open her own hotel in near future.
