Cook Training; New source of
Living
For
many Nepalese in Western Nepal, migrating to India for work
is a trend and an only option of survival in the absence of
employment opportunities in the country. Like many of them,
Push Bahadur Khatri too crossed the border and worked as a
labourer in a construction site and sometime as a helper in
a hotel for survival. He was not educated and did not have
any skill in hand therefore he could not find any decent
job. Disappointed with his life, he came back to Nepal and
decided to do something here.
Push bahadur’s dilemma became clear when he heard that
SKILL-Nepal was going to conduct cook training for out of
school youth with economically low background. He applied
for the training program, got selected and learnt the
imparted skill efficiently. Despite his low education, he
was able to grasp all the skills well because the teaching
methods were well designed and simple. The mobile training
concept made the trainers accessible anytime and Push
bahadur made full use of this by taking extra help from the
trainers even after the session. He completed the program
and started his own hotel. However, it wasn’t an easy task
in the beginning.
He took a loan and opened his hotel. He prepares clean,
hygienic and different types of dishes in his hotel.
Consequently, his hotel is always packed to capacity. He
makes a monthly profit of around 15000 to 20000. He has
already paid off his loan. He spends his income in meeting
his family’s basic need and plans to use his saving in
expanding the hotel . He never thought that a 2 month
training will change his life this way. Today , he is a
happy man and encourages other youths to learn some skill
and work in their own country amidst their own friends and
families.
