Why overseas if you have
skills in your hand
More than 1300 Nepalese
youth leave for foreign employment every day (The Foreign
Employment Department’s recent statistics) with the hope
and dreams of making it big in life. It has been estimated
that more than 90% of Nepalese migrant workers go abroad for
labour work and many land up with work of lower echelon and
low pay than the one they had been promised. It was no
different for Tirtha Ram Tamoli. Following the
footsteps of many other youths in his vicinity, Tirtha left
for Qatar to work in a carpet factory, instead he landed up
doing labour work for half the promised salary. Tirtha could
no longer face the exploitation so he returned home empty
handed.
The absence of sufficient source of
income and education in hand persuaded him to go abroad for
work but instead he got duped by manpower agent and his life
was back to square one. On his return from Qatar, he
realized that he will not be able to do anything productive
unless he had some skill in hand. He finally saw some hope
when SKILL Nepal with financial support from USAID/EIG
programme organized furniture making training in Kohalpur,
Banke. Considering, SKILL-Nepal’s strict selection
procedure, he was shortlisted for the training upon his
display of keen interest and commitment to make productive
use of the imparted skill.
He participated in two months carpentry
training held at Kohalpur, Banke. After consulting with
SKILL’s job placement unit, his confusion regarding whether
to work under someone or be self-employed was clear. Based
upon the suggestions, he decided to run his own small
carpentry shop soon after the training. He wanted to open
his own workshop and employ few of his colleagues. Following
his plan, he learnt imparted skills very sincerely, always
attempted to be the best among his mates during the
training. Practical exercise followed by the production of
furniture for real clients helped in polishing his skill and
uplifting his confidence. His dream came true on the new
year’s day of 2067 B.S. when he finally opened Binod
Furniture Udhyog. However, financial constrain and
managing enterprise was a big challenge for him in the
beginning but with business development support, networking
and linkages support from SKILL, Tirtha was able to meet
these challenges.
Today, he makes a net
profit of NC Rs. 10,000 per month.Along with financial gain,
he has been able to acquire satisfied customers. He has also
provided employment to his colleagues Mr. Ram Narayan Tharu
and Mr. Badri Narayan Tharu and he pays them Rs. 4,000
monthly. As long as you have skill and determination, your
country is the best market and Tirtha Ram Tamoli just proved
it right.
