Life Change Due to Skill Training
Mannu
Saru Magar
is a familiar name in Rajhena VDC, Banke. People know her as
the proprietor of “ Didi Bahini Tailors”. Today, she is an
entrepreneur of a well-known shop in her VDC but it wasn’t
long ago when Mannu was a simple housewife struggling to
meet her household’s daily need. Her husband was the sole
earning member in the family and it was difficult to manage
their house with his limited income. They did not own any
land and Mannu could not lend a helping hand to her husband
since she was not educated and did not have any skills in
hand. Mannu assumed that it was her karma and lived every
day in denial. However, her destiny took a turn when she
heard about Dress Making Training organized by SKILL Nepal
that was going to be held at Kohalpur, Banke.
Mannu Saru Magar suited well to the
criteria set by USAID/EIG through SKILL-Nepal for the
training. She completed all the necessary formalities and
was selected for the training program. In the beginning she
wondered if she would be able to learn the imparted skill
since she was uneducated and dress making training required
a person to do calculation and measurements. However, simple
method of teaching skills developed by SKILL made it easier
for uneducated Mannu to calculate and carry out measurements
while stitching a dress. This training comprised of complete
package including calculation, measurements, cutting,
designing, stitching to ironing the final product. During
the training, Mannu was able to stitch different types of
apparels since the entire training package comprised of
practical sessions. Her confidence increased even more when
they started taking orders from real clients during the
training session. These sessions proved to be very helpful
for her while opening her shop since her prospective clients
had seen her work during the course of the training program.
Mannu Saru Magar completed the training
with good performance and opened a shop in her own house.
She stitched well with good finishing and followed all the
tips required to be a good entrepreneur. Business management
sessions provided during the training helped her maintain
and attract customers. She was punctual and delivered
quality products. She also used some of the designing skills
to introduce new designs. In a short period of time, Mannu
Saru Magar’s karma changed. She makes a net profit of around
Rs. 5000 per month.
Today, she is financially
independent and supports her husband in running the family.
She spends her income in her children's' education and also
saves some money. She is very grateful to SKILL-Nepal and
USAID/Nepal for providing a life changing opportunity to
under privileged women like her. Her plan is to expand her
tailor shop and provide employment to other women in near
future
