Haircutting
was not a new term for Premlal. He was familiar with this
term from the time he was born. He was born to a Napit
family, who are traditional barbers. Napit belong to low
caste of newari clan and are traditionally involved in the
task of haircutting. However, haircutting or to be precise "jajmani"
was more of a tradition for him rather than a profession. He
knew that there was a lot of money if this trade was run
commercially. He had seen Indian barber make money by
cutting hair. He had the will and determination to compete
in the market and earn money out of this profession but he
lacked the most important thing, skill.
When he heard about the training that SKILL was going to
conduct, he jumped to the opportunity. Attending the
training was going to be tough for him because he lived in
Kavre and the venue identified for the training was
Lagankhel, Lalitpur. He did not let the distance come
between his desire and need for the skill and joined the
training that was conducted in the year 2003. He put in a
lot of effort during the training and successfully learned
all the skills that are necessary to do different style of
modern haircut and beard styling. By the end of the
training, he was a successful barber and the practical
exercises had made him more confident than ever.
Immediately after the training he opened a haircutting
saloon in Tinpiple, Kavre with an investment of
Rs.10,000-12,000. Ever since he started his shop, there has
been no looking back for him. Today, he is able to cater to
the demands of his clients. It is no wonder that his shop is
always crowded with customers. Initially he earned around Rs
5,000-6,000 per month. He has been working as a regular
SKILL trainer since 2008 and apart from that his current
income range only from his saloon is Rs. 400 to 500 per day
.This income has helped him contribute to his children's
school fee, brother's college fee and for household
expenses.
He put in a lot of hard work during the training and he
thinks that every effort was worth it. Today, he is a
satisfied man because he has been able to make correct use
of his skill and contribute towards his family's happiness. |
