No Need to Depend on Others When Skill is in Hand

Sukhmaya BK dropped out of school in sixth standard because of poor economic condition. Her parents got her married at a very young age but her husband left her and the children for another woman. Life became very difficult since she did not have any source of income. In order to survive, she started working as a helper in a tailor shop. She thought that during the process of working as a helper she would learn the skill and open her own shop. However, it seemed impossible because her employer only taught her the basic thread work and did not show any interest in teaching her. She wanted to attend training program and upgrade her skill but she could not afford to do so with the little income she earned.

Fortunately, USAID/Nepal’s Education for Income generation program was about to conduct Dress Maker training through SKILL-Nepal in the same area for under privileged youths like her. She did not think twice about it and participated in the training with full enthusiasm. She completed the training program and started her own tailoring shop in partnership with her friend. They named their shop, “Sheetal Tailors”. They were able to attract many customers with their good finished product. They made a profit of Rs. 10,000 to 12,000 per month.

She is a confident woman and can take good care of her children now. She doesn’t need to rely on anyone for livelihood. She spends her money on her children's education. She feels that the skill she gained in two months training made tremendous change in her life. She feels blessed to have an opportunity like this and is very grateful to USAID/ Nepal and SKILL-Nepal that she can now live her life with her head held high.
