"Right
from my childhood I had more interest in learning skills
than in school education", this is Keshab Shrestha,
extremely hardworking person and today an example of a
successful skill graduate.
Prior to joining the skill training he used to help around
in his father's mechanical shop and assist his uncles in
their work. Through them he had learned a little bit about
electrical work but he knew that this little knowledge would
never help him be an independent electrician. His uncles
were too busy to teach him the work. To put it in his own
word," if they were in good mood then they would explain
things properly to me otherwise they would just ignore my
queries." His urge to gain the skill increased every day.
His interest and encouragement from his father made him join
the 2 months long Basic Electrical House Wiring Training
which was held on 15 of May 2002 by SKILL in collaboration
with Nepal Red Cross society. According to him," Had I not
joined this training, I would have probably taken two years
to learn the same thing from my uncles." Ever since the
training, there has been no looking back for this graduate.
He started with small repair works. Around two months later,
he got a contract to wire a four roomed flat. He earned
around Rs.3000-4000 for the work. There were around 5-6
houses and 3-4 factories with whom he has permanent
alliance. If they have any electrical problem then they call
him. He charged around Rs.150 per hour in such cases. At
time he also provides them with free service. He was one of
the few SKILL graduates who experimented the water level
control, published in the skillpatra. After the sixth
continuous try he succeeded. His net income, depending upon
the availability of the work, lied within Rs.2000 to Rs.7000
per month. But now, 8 years after the training his monthly
income in average reaches to Rs.30,000. He gives half of his
income to the family and contributes in the execution of his
household expenses and his offspring's education. He uses
the remaining amount to buy tools and equipments.
He has upgraded his skill by taking further training in
motor rewinding and refrigeration repair and has opened his
own workshop. Besides, he also has under taken refrigeration
and AC repair and maintenance contract with many big hotels
and commercial banks in the capital. Keshav has already
conducted 5-6 events (Housewiring and Refrigerator and AC
repair and maintenance) as a main instructor of SKILL-Nepal.
For a hardworking and ambitious person like Keshab, there is
no stopping him. |
